Getting Your Baby in the Pool

When we think of swimming, we tend to think of an athletic activity with swimming lanes at a local pool or splashing in the sea on vacation. But swimming can be a great activity to involve your child in! In fact, I would highly recommend getting them introduced as soon as possible! Getting your baby in the pool can help to familiarize them with the environment and potentially lay the foundations for a fun and healthy hobby as they grow older. Plus, getting started with early swimming can teach your kid a valuable life skill!

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Choose the Right Pool

As you’re aware, there are different types of swimming pools. Some rec centers will only have pools designed for adults as mentioned above, with distinct lanes & a significant depth for diving. These, of course, aren’t going to be ideal for your little one.

Instead, look for pools that welcome kids of all ages, from newborns and toddlers to older children. This will ensure that your little one’s needs are met. You can always request to look around before signing up to a membership or paying an entry fee. You should look out for facilities with plenty of changing rooms (including diaper changing), shallow depths and other fun features like slides or fountains and sprinklers. Some pools will even have accessories to help your little one, like pool floats, for example.

Pack Properly

There’s a reason we say that kids are a handful. Its easy to underestimate the amount of stuff you have to carry around with you! In order to have a successful & comfortable visit to the pool, the same rule applies. Here is a good starter list:

  • Waterproof bag for belongings
  • Swim diapers (I like both disposable & reusable.)
  • Child’s swimsuit
  • Water wings or arm bands if they can’t yet swim
  • Towels (don’t forget yourself!)
  • Swim shoes or water resistant sandals
  • Change of clothes (especially underwear if you wear your suit under your clothes.)
  • A safe sunscreen, sunglasses & sun hat, if swimming outdoors

Its also a good idea to take a gentle baby wash & shampoo to make sure they are clean after their swim. This will rinse away any chlorine.

Go Slowly

This should be a FUN experience – don’t rush it. Take time introducing your little one to the water. Splash around gently. They’ll love it! As their skills progress, you can look into swim classes, which will give them independence in the water.

Swimming can be a great activity for your child & it can be a great bonding time for you too! Take some of my advice & get ready to dip your toes in at your next chance!
