You may not think of it in this way, but CONFIDENCE is a critical part of development. Though, if you are a special needs parent, you may have given this some extra thought (I know I have). Knowing how to encourage confidence in your child who is differently-abled is incredibly important.
If your child has low levels of confidence, they may likely struggle later in life. In fact, research suggests that people with low levels of confidence are less likely to succeed academically. This can have a ripple effect on their career. In addition, low confidence can impact personal relations. If you encourage confidence in your child from an early age, it will have an impact on their entire life.
Keep reading for some ideas on how to do this!

Learn Their Interests
First, you’ll need to pay attention, ask questions, & do what you can to find out your child’s interests. By putting your own suggestions aside, you may notice some hidden talents and/or passions they have!
Once you know what get them excited, encourage confidence by taking an interest in it yourself! Do you notice your baby trying to build with blocks? Is your toddler interested in making friends at the playground? Are they wanting to learn how to ride a bike? Are they motivated to learn a second language?
Pick up those blocks. Talk to those friends. Ride that bike. Download that app.
If they see you supporting them in their endeavors, you are showing that what they do & feel matters. This will encourage confidence & give them the push they need to pursue.
Let Them Socialize
People need other people. From the pandemic, this is a lesson I’ve learned to be true. It is the same for babies & young children. From an early age, it is important your kids are socializing & interacting with lots of other kids.
We can learn so much from each other. Your child will see that there are lots of ways to be successful & that everyone has their own set of skills. We are special in our own ways. Getting them to interact with others will give them the practice they may need to feel confident & let their personality shine!
Give Them A Boost
You should be exploring ways that you can encourage confidence by giving them a boost in the right direction. For instance, your child might love to write or draw. If that’s the case, it would be great to see their work published! This is an option with resources such as https://studentreasures.com/start-your-classbook/scripsi/. Whatever their interest is, help bring it to fruition!
Support Their Failures
The most important tip here is to remember that no one succeeds at everything. Teach & show your child that it is okay to try and fail. Whether it’s a soccer game or a spelling test, let them know that the important thing is they tried! This helps to ensure they strive to do better next time without putting too much pressure on themselves.
Hopefully this helps you understand some of the best ways to encourage confidence in your kids and help them reach for the skies! This is just one important aspect of helping your child grow, remember to teach them to be confident AND healthy too!
