My {21} Month Old With Down Syndrome

Baby Lemonade is 21-months old! It’s starting to get weird calling her “Baby” Lemonade at this point, especially after the month we’ve had. I’ve got two words for you: Developmental. Explosion.

This sweetpea is 20 lbs, 29 in. & has 10 teeth.

If you caught Kara’s last Health Update you know that we started her on a multivitamin as well as some thyroid medication. I think these are the reasons we’re seeing for her boost in motivation! She has more energy, more confidence, and is {wayyy} more interactive with others.

Let’s jump right to the things we can check off her to do list.

Some of these we’ve been working on since she was 10-months old!!!

✔ Pull up on furniture

✔ Get down from furniture

✔ Side-step & start to cruise furniture

✔ Climb the stairs (& the coffee table)

✔ Crawl/Bear crawl

✔ Start to independently use a fork at meal time

✔ Velcro shoes

✔ Buckle seat belt

✔ Sign in sentences (e.g. “I want more Moana please” or “I need help with my milk”)

I knew that the second she WANTED to move, she would…Her PT says that she’s caught the “mobility bug“.

And here we are! We’re really in trouble now! She has MUCH interest in walking and would rather be on her feet, but right now, we’re working on strengthening her core. As soon as she’s strong enough, she will take off and there is no one who can stand in her way – Guaranteed.

Here’s a bonus list of things that weren’t on her to-do list, but she decided to check off anyway:

♥ Develop a battle cry for anytime Mom isn’t looking directly at her.

♥  Solidify the word “defiant” in her character description.

♥  Bruise mama’s belly loving on her growing on her little sister so much.

♥  Steal everyone’s heart with her under-the-chin wave & perfectly crafted goodbye smooch.

♥  Learn to love bedtime.

♥  Repeatedly drench the entire room during her bath.

♥  Prove me wrong, yet again, when I thought that I couldn’t love her more.

I’m seeing a very particular {perfectionist} side of her. She likes to line things up in a row, especially on the side of the bathtub. She wants her toys and books sitting upright. & she prefers her puzzles pieces to be EXACTLY in place before you start cheering….

…the other day as I was working, I hear her clapping from her little playpen.  I peek over and see that she’s put a puzzle piece in the right space. “Yay, sweetpea!” I say, very excitedly and I hand her another piece. “Where does it go?” not really expecting anything out of the interaction. Yet, without hesitation she turns and puts it on top of the right space (not completely in, mind you). YAYYYYY!!!!! OHMYGOODNESS, YOU’RE SO SMART!!! I’M SO PROUD! etc. etc. etc. came squealing out of my mouth.

Apparently my excitement was premature. She looked up at me with the most annoyed look on her face and calmly signed “all done” waving her hands back and forth by her ears. Then she fit the piece in place and clapped for herself once again. Hah!

She has so much wonderful personality.

Her newest bestie is Buckaroo, our long-haired Dachshund. I’ve noticed a shift in interest as she’s grown. She used to be all about Pete, our English Setter, who is appealing because he’s bigger, very energetic and beautifully spotted. Now she’s really noticing Roo who is calm, soft and cuddly.

Wherever he is, she will find him and lay all over him. She hugs, kisses, and smooths his soft fur. There is no end to her affection.

She {loves} to {love} him & he doesn’t mind it either 🙂

The weather is warm and beautiful & I’m taking full advantage of flexible work hours by taking my girl outdoors, even if it means getting a little less shut eye as I squeeze in my hours during the night. There will always be work and let’s face it, the house will always be a mess. As I keep up with these monthly posts, I realize how quickly she grows. I feel like every single month I can rightfully say “she has grown & changed so much!”

Therefore, I relish these moments.

I was recently telling Jacob that this is a season in my life I wish I could freeze. I could stop time & happily live here forever. Kara is in such a fun & loving stage and little sister is growing safely (& somewhat comfortably) inside my belly.

These are the days that I’m going to look back on in five, ten, fifty years and smile. Its bitter, knowing that this season will pass and that we’ll undoubtedly face hardships in the future, but its sweet also knowing that the next calm & happy season will be right around the corner.

My focus is to live in the moment & let all the little things sink into every cell of my body so I never forget them.
