How A Dog Can Support Your Child’s Development

If you’ve landed on this page, my guess is you are likely a special needs mom (&/or dog lover). My second guess is that you’re a good one if you’re worrying about how a dog can support your child’s development at home. As a busy mom with a daughter who has Down syndrome I understand (like, really truly understand) your level of worry. It is perfectly natural to be anxious for your kids – even more so if they have special needs. What better way to support your child’s development than with a pup?!

A dog is called man’s best friend for a reason. A dog can help battle loneliness, boost life expectancy, lower stress & anxiety, & encourage physical activity. Did you know that staring into your dog’s eyes releases oxytocin (a.k.a. the “love/cuddle” hormone?)

Dogs Bond with Children

Having pets can be beneficial no matter what, but even more so if you have a child with Down syndrome. Dogs, in particular, have demonstrated feelings of empathy towards their owners and family members. Studies have actually shown that dogs can detect when a person is upset. This empathetic intuition helps them bond & shows that they are able to focus on your child’s well-being instead of their own.

If you’re ever worried about your child bonding with a dog, do some research into different breeds. Labradors, though a larger breed, are usually very gentle towards humans and can demonstrate love & care to your child with Down syndrome. Larger breeds can be highly intelligent and would be able to protect your little one, particularly if they are older & start exploring the outside world. You can look into this web page for some information on on purchasing a Labrador if you haven’t found a special buddy at your local shelter.

On the other hand, smaller breeds like Dachshunds are great too. Buckaroo, our long-haired Doxie, is the most lovable snuggler! You can learn more about him here. Smaller breeds can still provide a level of security & can play without the possibility of bowling over your kid, hah!

Stronger Social/Emotional Skills

There is data that demonstrates that having a dog can be beneficial for your child’s development from a young age. The research found that children with a dog at home were less likely to have social or emotional problems compared to children the same age that did not have a dog in the family home. Its not surprising when you think how dogs get you out of your home & comfort zone. They open the door to conversation; therefore, help to develop stronger social skills. The responsibility alone of owning a pet will help to develop strong emotional skills.

Broad Sensory Development

As children are developing they rely heavily on their environment to learn from. This is called sensory play and a dog can support child’s development by providing just that! Someone with Down syndrome benefits greatly from sensory activities because they respond well to scenarios that uses their sense of touch. Think of everything from their soft, wet tongues to their rough, dry paws. A soft coat of fur will give a completely different sensation opposed to a wiry one.

Conclusion

Whether or not your child has Down syndrome – know that they will do things at their own pace. It is important to not compare them to friends or siblings (easier said than done, I know). Your child will have struggles to face & obstacles to bear, but they will also have many MANY strengths. In fact, studies have shown that kiddos with Down syndrome tend to demonstrate certain positive social skills to begin with anyway.

Having a pup around will help introduce them to many social situations, motivate them physically & provide sensory learning. The cuddles are just a perk.
