Pets, Allergies & Down Syndrome

Pets, Allergies & Down syndrome - ever wonder how dander might affect someone with Down syndrome?

For many people, a pet is a great way to make you & your family happier. So happy, in fact, its easy to forget that they bring allergens! For those with Down syndrome, it can sometimes mean they will feel the effects of those allergens a little more. A lot of times (not all the time) people with Down syndrome experience dry skin and hair, eczema, and respiratory issues. Also, keep in mind that people with Down syndrome will usually have shorter, more narrow canals in their ears and noses. Any sort of allergy to dander will be felt on a bigger scale. Because of this, allergies & Down syndrome just don’t mix well.

Of course, I’m not saying to get rid of your animals, but be mindful. Read on for some helpful approaches to keeping your home allergen free.

Clean Your Air Conditioner/Purifier

When it comes to purifying your home, you need to have HEPA filters installed on your air purifiers. Devices like these must be kept clean, otherwise, they just kick up & blow around dust particles. It’s easy enough to get 24 hour AC service if you have any concerns with your air conditioner. If you need extra protection, an air purifier reduces indoor air pollutants.

Don’t Slack On Your Cleaning Routine

Most people deep clean their homes during the spring, but to prepare for a pet, you should know how to clean your home properly. You need to stick to a strict weekly cleaning regime, but also pay attention to areas that gather dust and pollen. If you have carpets, learn how to clean them properly or even consider removing the carpets or purchase anti-allergen covers for places like your bed.

Purchase a High-Quality Vacuum Cleaner

If your vacuum cleaner struggles to pick up pet hair, you need to invest in a stronger vacuum. In fact, you might need to invest in a vacuum that is especially built for pet hair and dander. There are some great vacuums that do the job, but it’s worth choosing one that comes with a HEPA filter. Check out something close to THIS.

Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Materials

You need to make your home clean as possible, and having a pet around means you have to be vigilant of irritants. If you are cleaning like crazy, but still notice sneezing or your loved one with Down syndrome struggling to breathe, look at your cleaning products. Non-toxic cleaning materials can make allergies more bearable. There are ways for you to make your own cleaning products using items like vinegar and baking soda. But there are also plenty of products that use natural ingredients instead of chemicals.

Monitor Allergens

In addition to making your home as allergen-free as possible for your loved one with Down syndrome, you should also consider tracking how allergic they are on a specific day. It is easy to find an app that you can use to monitor the presence of allergens in your area. An app like Zyrtec can be connected to your smart assistant. You can decide quickly whether you need to change their clothes, administer an antihistamine that day, or decide to play outdoors with your pet if possible.

Allergies around the home can be frustrating. While you could always pop an antihistamine, it’s about making sure that you are being practical when it comes to avoiding environmental allergies.
